An incredible evening and fitting finale to Australia Day 2020 celebrations in Sydney.
Mr Andrew Parker, Chair of the Australia Day Council of NSW warmly welcomed over 400 guests to the Australia Day Reception at the Sydney Opera House on 26 January 2020. Guests included Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of NSW and Mr Dennis Wilson, The Honourable Gladys Berejiklian, Premier of NSW and the 2020 Australians of the Year.
Reception guests enjoyed the ultimate vantage point to experience Australia Day Live, a concert featuring Aussie music icons Vanessa Amorosi, John Williamson, The Original Seekers, Eurovision star Isaiah Firebrace, along with rockers Eskimo Joe, singing star Christine Anu, the 2019 Voice winner Diana Rouvas, opera supremo Daniel Belle, talented Indigenous vocal group KARI, and world-renowned didgeridoo player William Barton. Artists were accompanied by the Sydney Symphony and the concert was broadcast live to the nation on ABC TV.
At the same time a musical and fireworks extravaganza was taking place on Circular Quay with harbour parades, jet-ski shows and dazzling pyrotechnic displays to more than 60,000 revellers.
Saluting our Aussie Heroes
Australia Day 2020 provided an occasion to show our gratitude for the inspirational spirit, courage and generosity shown by emergency volunteers and responders. Their ongoing contribution and sacrifices made during the bushfire season was acknowledged by a minute's silence which saw over 60,000 people gathered around the precinct hold their torch lights aloft as a flotilla of vessels, the Sydney Opera House sails and the Sydney Harbour Bridge were illuminated in a moving tribute.
Australia Day Live hosted almost 2,000 volunteers including NSW Rural Fire Service and frontline responders as honoured guests for the night
“Together we are bringing a deeper significance to our national day through supporting each other. This year’s Australia Day Live concert at the Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay was a night which showed the Australian spirit, celebrated our resilience and our solidarity to those affected.” John Foreman OAM
